Orthognathic surgery is also known as corrective jaw surgery or simply, face surgery. This type of surgery is designed to correct skeletal positions of the jaw bones related to facial asymmetry, facial disharmony and incorrect bite. These can be consequences of abnormal or unbalanced facial growth and development, sleep apnea or TMJ disorders.

Life-changing experience

There is more to jaw surgery than just face aesthetics, the primarily objective of jaw surgery is actually to correct facial harmony, correct the bite and improve function of your masticatory system.

In certain cases, orthodontics alone (braces or aligners) cannot treat or camouflage the skeletal disharmonies that our patients present with. Hence, this type of complex treatments require a fine tuned combination of orthodontic treatment and corrective jaw surgery. The aim is to correct the bite and the function of your jaws and, at the same time, to  provide you with an improved and balanced facial aesthetics.

Typically treatment is carried out over a period of 1 to 3 years and starts with a very thorough assessment of your condition and your desired outcomes. Before you start this journey, we will be also facilitating a meeting with one of the highly skilled  surgeons we work with.  It is important to ensure you have a deep understanding of the work involved. The orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances is aimed to align the teeth in the ideal positions . Thereafter, approximately two thirds of the way through treatment, you should be ready for the jaw surgery. Following on from the surgery, patients generally continue with the orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances for 6-9months to fine tune their bite.

We understand that this is a life-changing treatment. We encourage our patients to take informed decisions and we are always here to support and advice them on which treatment route to follow.

F.A.Q.

Is it painful?

Everyone is unique and patients cope with this life changing process in different ways. You can expect a level of discomfort which will be different for each individual while you undergo the pre-surgical orthodontic phase. The actual jaw surgery is performed under general anesthesia. The first 5 to 10 days after surgery are the most difficult ones and you will be needing your family support. While you are recovering, we will be starting the post-surgical orthodontic phase and we will try to remove your braces as soon as possible.

What does the jaw surgery involve?

Jaw surgery may involve surgery to your upper jaw (maxilla) or the lower jaw (mandible) or a combination of both depending on your concerns and individual assessment by our team. The surgery is carried out from inside your mouth so there will be no visible scars on your face. During your surgery your jaws are repositioned and held in their new position by small screws and plates beneath the gum, which are generally left there indefinitely. The first 5 to 10 days after surgery are the most difficult ones and you will be needing your family support.

What care is in place if I have a problem?

We always offer appointments to see patients as soon as possible. Your care is important for us and we are always on hand to give advice and help you resolve the problem efficiently.

How do you plan for my face surgery?

The esthetic result of the surgery and the desired facial changes are discussed and planned during the pre-surgery consultations with the surgeon and the orthodontist. Sometimes, 3D predictions of the outcome can be provided by the surgeon. Each patient has different expectations for surgical results and different perception of oneself, therefore in order to avoid misunderstandings, we believe that clear communication and realistic expectations are key to success.

Will jaw surgery change the appearance of my face?

Yes, jaw surgery is going to change your facial appearance and it is going to improve and correct any existing facial disharmonies and asymmetries. During the initial consultation you will be able to discuss with our orthodontists about your concerns and we will advice you if jaw surgery in combination with orthodontics is the right choice to achieve your expectations.

How can I pay for my treatment?

Once you have decided to start treatment, our Treatment Coordinator will be in touch with you and will talk you through the various financial packages we can offer you.
